DUBUQUE WEEKLY TRIBUNE
DUBUQUE WEEKLY TRIBUNE. The Dubuque Weekly Tribune was founded by A. P. Wood and first published on December 21, 1846. It offered a weekly and daily edition. On August 15, 1848 the Dubuque Semi-Weekly Tribune reported the first telegraph message received in Dubuque. The message told of the nomination of Martin Van Buren for President of the United States.
W.A. Adams and A.W. Hackley became its publishers in 1854 and Hackley the sole owner and editor the following year. In 1853 the paper was enthusiastic in its support of local efforts to raise money for railroad construction.
The "Tribune" purchased the DEMOCRATIC TELEGRAPH in 1850. In 1857 the Tribune purchased the Dubuque Republican begun two years earlier. The combined newspapers continued as the Tribune until March 9, 1858.
