DUBUQUE CIVIC THEATRE
DUBUQUE CIVIC THEATRE. Founded by John DWANE, the Dubuque Civic Theatre was advertising its organization and practice sessions at the Studio Workshop at 210 West 7th Street as early as November, 1959. Among those who joined early was Thomas M. FLEMING and Sol TABAK.
Presentations to the public began in 1960 with The John Galsworthy play "Escape" presented in March at the BRYANT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL auditorium. "Separate Tables" was presented at the LINCOLN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL auditorium in August. "Whing-A-Ding" tryouts were finished early in April, 1962 for a production that year and the organization was included among the Julien Dubuque Carnival Boosters in June 1963. (1) In 1964 the Civic Theatre produced "Guys and Dolls" for the Summer Carnival using the auditorium at DUBUQUE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL.
The Dubuque Civic Theatre was still listed as a non-profit in 1997. (2)
