DOERRMANN, Fred. (Grand Duchy of Baden, Germany--aft 1947). Generations of Doerrmann males were tailors. After completing his education, Fred entered a two and one-half year apprenticeship in tailoring and then traveled to Strasburg, Province of Alsace where he worked at his trade for several months. On completion of this training, he took his "card" and set out to work at different establishments. The owner of each business wrote his business name on the card so that they tailor could show his experience. He worked in Zurich, Switzerland; Paris, France; and London, England before coming to the United States.

In 1894 he came to Dubuque and opened his tailor business on Clay Street. In 1910 he moved his business to the sixth floor of the BANK AND INSURANCE BUILDING.
