Malls. One of the most controversial developments in American business, malls were located near the edge of towns where hundreds of acres for development could be purchased. Businesses located in cities where land was expensive and parking often unavailable, moved to these malls leaving downtowns vacant. This led to such developments as URBAN RENEWAL that resulted in many historic buildings being demolished in the hopes of drawing business back into the center of communities.
