COMMITTEE OF NINE. On June 29, 1923 the TELEGRAPH HERALD reported that after four months of "searching investigation" into alleged un-American textbooks said to be taught in the schools of Iowa and the nation, the Committee of Nine was about to end this stage of its work. The Committee, according to the newspaper, was composed of "practically every patriotic organization in the city."

The secretary of the committee was to draw up a complete report of the activities of the committee and deliver the report to a meeting held in the home of Mrs. Edward J. Beach. Following approval of the report and recommendations to be submitted to the board of education, the secretary would be authorized to submit the findings to superintendent Otis P. FLOWER.

The committee was then expected to begin the work of investigating alleged un-patriotic histories said to be taught in the high schools of the state and nation. Only three or four of the high school textbooks would be considered by the committee.
