COMMERCIAL NATIONAL BANK OF DUBUQUE
COMMERCIAL NATIONAL BANK OF DUBUQUE. This national bank, assigned charter number 1801, opened in 1871 and stopped printing money in 1888 which was actually quite brief. The bank printed $344,560 dollars worth of national currency issued in different types and denominations.
The Commercial National Bank Of Dubuque in Iowa issued 2,400 sheets of $1 original series national bank notes. A print range between 1,000 and 2,500 is small. One of the most interesting things about early first charter one dollar national bank notes is all of the different slight variations you can find. Some notes have a red charter number, others do not. Some have red serial numbers and some have blue serial numbers. Some are printed on white paper and others are printed on paper with a slight blue tint.
The Commercial National Bank Of Dubuque printed 2,400 sheets of $2 original series national bank notes. The production numbers for original series two dollar bills for informational purposes. All $2 bills printed before 1875 are very rare.
The Commercial National Bank Of Dubuque also printed 5,400 sheets of $5 original series national bank notes. Each five dollar original series bank note had a spiked red seal. This was the only significant design difference between it and later issues. The back of each note had a vignette of the corresponding state seal. Some of the state seals were very imaginative.
The Commercial National Bank Of Dubuque printed 2,780 sheets of $1 series of 1875 national bank notes. This was typical for a medium sized national bank in the 1870s.
The bank printed 2,780 sheets of $2 series of 1875 national bank notes. These were only printed until 1878.
The were 10,533 sheets of $5 series of 1875 national bank notes. This was a high issue number for a national bank.
In 1871 the Commercial National Bank of Dubuque was organized with officers including R. E. GRAVES, president; Henry L. STOUT, vice-president; and H. M. Kingman, cashier. The bank closed on March 20, 1888, and eventually paid seventy cents on the dollar to depositors.
