CHRISTMAN, Jacob. (Moselle, France, Jan.19, 1824--Dubuque, IA, 1900). Christman's parents came to this country in 1832 and moved to Dubuque in September, 1837. He grew up in the community and went to work in the store of Jesse P. FARLEY as a clerk. Christman remained with him several years and in 1847 formed a partnership with Farley in the hardware trade.

Christman later went into business with Richard WALLER in the firm of Christman, Waller & Co. That continued about ten years. Christman's brother, Augustus CHRISTMAN established a business in 1867. The following year, Jacob became associated with his brother, and they conducted the business of J. AND A. CHRISTMAN AND COMPANY at 672 Main Street.

Christman was elected Vice President of the GERMAN BANK and served as Acting President for two years. He also held the office of city alderman.
