CENTRALIA POTTERY
CENTRALIA POTTERY. In 1874 it was announced that Centralia Pottery would be moving its operation to Dubuque. To encourage the relocation, Henry L. STOUT provided a lot, as had been requested by the proprietor of the company, near MOORE'S MILL. (1) The company was described as "not a very extensive establishment, but it is an industrial enterprise of a character we need." The company employed six or seven. (2)
While not identifying the company being described, the Herald in 1879 described an "earthenware manufactory" operating from a 40 x 100 foot brick building two stories high with a large cellar used for grinding the clay. The first floor was used "for glazing and drying the goods and the second story for the turning process." Two men were employed at turning and two at glazing and drying. Another person for turning was soon to be hired. The kiln had a capacity for twenty-five hundred gallons which required about thirty-six hours to burn. (3)
