CENTENNIAL COMMISSION. In 1876 the United States was planning to hold a major celebration of the nation's one-hundredth anniversary in Philadelphia. Mrs. Emily F. Ives was appointed by the centennial commission to canvass Iowa for products to be displayed. (1)

Mrs. C. A. Wheeler of Des Moines also visited Dubuque. Since the Iowa Legislature had not budget money for representing Iowa at the Philadelphia, it was her task to solicit contributions. It was hoped Dubuque County could raise $330. (2)
