BUCHHOLTZ, Wayne. In 1978 Buchholtz began his career in the state park system as he finished his degree in biology at Upper Iowa University. During college he was employed as a seasonal worker at Gull Point State Park in Okoboji and Volga River State Park. (1)

Wayne began his full time career in Sioux City as the Park Attendent at Stone State Park for seven years and then Lake McBride State Park in Solon for three years. In 1991, he was promoted to Ranger 1 at Lake Manawa State Park in Council Bluffs for two years. (2)

In 1993, he moved to Dubuque to be the Head Park Ranger at Mines of Spain State Park in Dubuque where he developed interpretative and educational events for all ages, leading hikes, managing the 1,500 acre park, and improving the E. B. LYONS INTERPRETATIVE CENTER. (3)

Buchholtz, a member of the local Audubon's board of directors and former president, believed lawmakers should consider public comment on environmental issues as part of the decision-making process. He was a signatory to a December letter from 24 groups and individuals based in Iowa urging President Barack Obama and Iowa's U.S. Congressional delegation to halt efforts to resume drilling in Alaska. The letter cited Shell's difficulties in exploratory drilling in 2012 as reason to cease the practice. (4)

Buchholtz retired in 2016.
