BLOESCH, Donald G. (Bremen, IN, May 3, 1928--Dubuque, IA, Aug. 24, 2010). Graduating from Elmhurst College in 1950 and the Chicago Theological Seminary in 1953, Bloesch was ordained in the Evangelical and Reformed Church. He served a parish in Richton Park, Illinois for three years while studying for his doctor of philosophy at the University of Chicago Divinity School. After completing his degree in 1956, he continued his studies at Oxford University through a scholarship from the World Council of Churches.

Bloesch began his 35-year teaching career at the UNIVERSITY OF DUBUQUE Theological Seminary in 1957. He returned to Switzerland and Germany in 1963 and 1964 for post-doctoral research at the universities of Basel and Tubingen. In addition to his teaching, Bloesch was the author of forty books including his seven-volume theology Christian Foundations and his two-volume Essentials of Evangelical Theology. This latter book has remained in print for thirty years.

A past president of the Midwest Division of the American Theological Society, Bloesch was internationally recognized for his "contemporary expression of Reformed theology from the standpoint of the American evangelical tradition."
