BIRCH RIDING ACADEMY. Owned by Jesse "Curly" Birch, the riding academy had 22 horses and ponies. The operation employed Mary Welp who may have been the only female shoer of horses in the state. In addition to helping her uncle, she found her assistance needed during the DUBUQUE COUNTY FAIR when out-of-town horsemen needed her help with their stock. (1)

The 1966 Dubuque City Directory listed 690 Fremont.
