BERNS, Karla K. (Waukon, IA, Nov. 29, 1940--Dubuque, IA, May 26, 2013) The daughter of Verni and Eleanora(Taake) Berns, Karla was educated at Union Prairie #2 rural grade school and St. Patrick's High School in Waukon. She received her bachelor's degree from CLARKE COLLEGE and her master's degree from LORAS COLLEGE. She received her RN diploma from Mercy School of Nursing in Dubuque. As a Presentation Sister for 12 years (Sr. M. Mark), she devoted her life to God and education.

Karla began her working career at MERCY MEDICAL CENTER where she held various positions in medical- surgical units. She began teaching nursing in 1970 at Mercy School of Nursing until it closed in 1974. She then worked at Northeast Iowa Community College for twenty-nine years as a nursing instructor, health department dean, Peosta Campus Provost and Vice President of Education Services for the district. She retired in 2003.
