BERK, Max. (Russia, 1879--Dubuque, IA, Jan. 1, 1949). Berk operated the Golden Eagle, a clothing store originally called the GOLDEN EAGLE ONE-PRICE CLOTHING HOUSE in Dubuque. He was best remembered for his pawnshop between Third and Fourth Streets on Main that featured three large gold balls, the historical sign of a pawn shop, hung outside to attract attention.
