BELZ, Charles P. (Germany, 1838--Dubuque, IA, July 17, 1912). Belz and his parents came to America when he was nine years of age and lived in St. Louis. They came to Dubuque in 1852. He lived in the city until 1857 when he moved to Missouri for several years.

During the CIVIL WAR, he enlisted in Co. D, 5th I.V.I., under Captain Charles Mehl, of St. Louis and was in the battles of Carthage and Wilson's Creek.

He returned to Dubuque and clerked in a store until 1876 when he opened his grocery business.
