ASBURY SQUARE
ASBURY SQUARE. Located along Kennedy Road and south of Asbury Road, Asbury Square was constructed in the late 1960s. Plans for the development were announced on February 27, 1969 by Asbury Square, Inc., a local organization headed by Homer Butt and Edward TURNQUIST.
The shopping center was the first of three phases to include a supermarket and apartment complex. The supermarket, in a separate building, was set behind the shopping center and parallel to Asbury Road. The apartment complex to include from sixty to ninety units was be to be directly to the west of the supermarket. Two of the early businesses in the shopping center were COCK 'N BULL and HARTIG DRUG COMPANY.
In 2010 major renovations meant an increase in the Hartig site from 11,000 to 15,000 square feet. James Martin Jewelers which occupied the northern-most part of the rectangular building moved to 620 Kennedy Road. The Dubuque Driver License Station relocated to 2460 Gateway Drive Key West. Comic World also moved out. Subway, a restaurant, remained in the location along with Pella Window and Therapeutic Massage which had been a tenant for fourteen years.
