APOSTOLATE (THE)
APOSTOLATE (THE). The Apostolate succeeded THE HAPPY HOME. Archbishop John J. KEANE founded a missionary band of diocesan priests who were called the Apostolates. They agree to take over the publication of The Happy Home if they were allowed the change the name of the paper. Father T.W. Drumm, later consecrated Bishop of Des Moines, suggested "The Apostolate."
Founded in 1905, the paper with the motto "Devoted To The Diffusion Of Catholic Doctrine--There Shall Be One Fold and One Shepherd," was published monthly by the Apostolate Publishing Company. While "The Happy Home" had been particularly interested in Catholic total abstinence societies, the "Apostolate" was devoted to spreading Catholic doctrine. Some of the features of the publication were "Catholic Press Comments," "The Home Circle," "Foreign Mission Notes" and "News and Timely Topics." The publication was discontinued in 1921.
The 1911-12 Dubuque City Directory listed 143 5th.
The 1916-1917 White's Dubuque County Directory listed 295 6th as the address.
