ANTARCTICA. Ice-covered continent surrounding the South Pole. The first chaplain on Antarctica was Rev. William J. MENSTER of Dubuque. Menster, a naval chaplain, accompanied Admiral Richard E. Byrd during "Operation Highjump," the first expedition of the continent sanctioned by the United States government. Menster wrote the "continental blessing" which he led on January 26, 1947.
