AFGHANISTAN
AFGHANISTAN. A Middle Eastern country involved in wars for decades, Afghanistan was an important setting for the global war on terrorism involving the United States since the terrorist attack on New York City on September 11, 2001.
Joseph Lemm, a native of Dubuque, was killed in Afghanistan on December 21, 2015 when his patrol was attacked by a suicide bomber outside the Bagram Air Base. Lemm, a 15-year veteran on the New York City Police Department, was a technical sergeant in the New York Air National Guard's 105th Base Security Squadron and had served two tours in Afghanistan and one in Iraq.
