YELLOW SANDSHELL. Mussel. Typically found in clean swept sandy areas in the main channel, this species of mussel grows to an adult length of from 4.5 to 6 inches. Historically it was widespread, but has declined enough to be labeled rare. Host fish for the young include the alligator gar and the longnose gar.
