WITTENBERG, Gent. (Detroit, MI, Oct. 27, 1922--Bella Vista, AR, Oct. 29, 2006]] The son of Meyer Wittenberg and Muriel (Sheldon) Wittenberg, Gent was educated in Toledo, Ohio. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WORLD WAR II and in the U.S. Air Force during the KOREAN CONFLICT. (1)

Wittenberg was the deputy director of urban renewal and the assistant director of law in the Toledo, Ohio city government beginning in 1959. In 1965 he moved to Dubuque, Iowa where he was Director of Urban Renewal and later became Assistant City Manager. (2) His hiring in 1965 was partly based on his experience with two downtown renewal programs in Toledo. One of the programs had cost $17 million and covered 88 acres. The second had covered 12.5 acres. Survey and planning work was to begin after his arrival. (3)

Wittenberg worked for Helping Hands for 14 years, and was president of their Board of Directors for 3 years during the building of their new facility. He was a moderator at the Judson American Baptist Church in Bella for 3 years, after which he served on numerous boards and newsletter editor for the church. (4)
