The early part of the 1900s was an exciting time of new inventions for women. Though the early permanent wave machines looked very strange, with separate wires leading to each chemical-wrapped curl, they were the most modern, and many women wanted to try the new style. The 1962 through 1977 Dubuque City Directory listed the Viola Klumpp salon at 216 Stampfer Building.
