SUTHERLAND, Richard E. (Dubuque, IA, June 24, 1945--Quang Tri, South Vietnam, Sept. 21, 1967) Sutherland graduated from DUBUQUE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL in the class of 1963 and married a local girl.

He joined the Navy in August 1965 and trained to be a medic, achieving the rank of Hospitalman (HN). HN Sutherland was sent to Vietnam in late August 1967 and attached to a Marine company as a medic with the 3rd Marine Division.

He was killed three weeks into his tour on September 21, 1967. HN Sutherland died during combat with the enemy on Hill 158 southeast of Con Thien during Operation Kingfisher.

A funeral service was held at the Saint Anthony’s Church and he was buried with full military honors at the Mount Calvary Cemetery, both in Dubuque.
