STIERMAN, ERIC. (Dubuque, IA, Dec. 30, 1954-- ). With a degree in finance from the University of Northern Iowa, Stierman served former deputy county auditor and deputy county treasurer. He ran for auditor when incumbent Terrence HIRSCH decided not to seek reelection in 1984. Although he had a majority of the popular votes, Stierman did not have 35% and consequently the Democratic Party called a convention to select their nominee. They chose Michael MACFARLAND who went on to victory in November.

When a deputy position opened in the treasurer's office, Stierman went to work from treasurer Thomas William BREITBACH. When the latter retired in 1989, he recommended Stierman be appointed for the balance of the term. The Dubuque County Board of Supervisors, however, chose to appoint Robert M. CARR, a man who had never lost an election and had party and labor support. Stierman worked as an auditor for the ARCHDIOCESE OF DUBUQUE for five years. (1)

In the primary election of 1994, Stierman defeated Carr with 60% of the vote. (2) In the election, he ran unopposed. (3)

After being elected seven consecutive times, Stierman retired in January, 2022 after twenty-seven years in office.
