RIVERWORKS DISCOVERY. In 2004 American Electric Power's River Operations barge line operating from Chesterfield, Missouri began considering how it could educate youth about the importance of the nation's rivers. Eventually the idea developed of taking the program to area fourth and fifth grade classrooms emphasizing Title I schools. AEP began looking for corporate so-sponsors in 2008. By 2010 with twenty-five co-sponsors the company realized the program had grown beyond the initial purpose and began looking for a new host. AEP also wanted the program to move into a nonprofit and found the NATIONAL MISSISSIPPI RIVER MUSEUM AND AQUARIUM to be an ideal match.

Since 2010 the RiverWorks Discovery program has attracted almost one hundred fifty major sponsors. Some of these fund the continuing travel of the 2,000-square-foot exhibit which costs more than one million dollars to produce. Citizen donors also want to ensure the National River Museum operates outside of Dubuque. RiverWorks Discovery events have occurred in eighteen states through January 2015.
