NEY, Albert. (Berlin, Germany, 1849--Dubuque, January, 26, 1927) Ney came to America in 1873 and after living in Chicago three years moved to Dubuque. For forty-six years he operated one of the most successful contracting businesses in the city.

In February 1891, Albert Ney submitted the winning bid for the construction of the DUBUQUE COUNTY COURTHOUSE. (1) It was announced in March of that year that Ney was also outfitting a suite of offices on the second floor in the Board of Trade Building and would serve lunch as soon as the work was finished. (2) in 1895 he was awarded the contract for Bedford stone, brickwork, carpentry, painting, plastering, roofing and all materials for the DUBUQUE BREWING AND MALTING COMPANY. (3) The same year he won the contract for the carpentry work on the SECURITY BUILDING. (4) In 1899 his firm was awarded the contract for structural iron and steel improvements on the JAMES LEVI AND COMPANY building. (5) He supervised the construction of such other landmark buildings as the 15th Street high school, MOUNT CARMEL MOTHERHOUSE, JULIEN HOTEL which was destroyed by fire in 1913, SACRED HEART CHURCH, and HOLY GHOST CATHOLIC CHURCH. He was also responsible for many schools, homes, civic buildings and churches throughtout the state. (6)

In November, 1892 when articles of incorporation for DUBUQUE PRESSED BRICK COMPANY were adopted, he was named as a director. He was a director of the DUBUQUE SAVINGS AND LOAN ASSOCIATION at the time of his death.

At the time of his death, Herman Ney purchased the contracting business. (7)

The 1890-91 Dubuque City Directory listed the southeast corner of 7th and Locust.

The 1899-1900 Dubuque City Directory listed 446 Main.

The 1909 through the 1923 Dubuque City Directory gave 1560 Iowa.
