MEYER, Joseph L. (Chictawaga, NY, July 16, 1863--Dubuque, IA, Nov. 25, 1946). One of the original members of the CHURCH OF THE NATIVITY, Meyer helped establish the first finance committee of that parish, served as a member from its beginning, and at the time of his death was the committee chairman. He was also a member of the ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY and on many occasions distributed alms and food to the needy of Dubuque. He was a member of the DUBUQUE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, DUBUQUE TRAVELING AND BUSINESS MEN'S ASSOCIATION, and the Dubuque Rotary. He helped organize the Dubuque Community Chest and in 1929 was one of the first vice-presidents and a member of the first executive committee. Meyer served as first chairman of the special gifts committee and in 1935 became its president.

Meyer's business career started in Kerper's store in New Vienna. He moved to Dubuque and worked as a salesman with the H. B. GLOVER COMPANY for twenty years. He became a vice-president of the Thomas J. Mulgrew Company and in 1916 organized the WHITE HOUSE BISCUIT COMPANY.

He retired in 1940, but at the time of his death was a member of the board of the the Midwest Timmerman Company and the Power Aire Company. He was secretary-treasurer of the Safety-Pop Corporation and a member of the board of directors of the A. A. Schneiderbahn Company.
