MCFARLAND, John J. (Dubuque, IA-Dubuque, IA, July 5, 1978). Superintendent of Mails. McFarland, employed at the Dubuque Post Office from 1936 until his retirement in 1972, held a variety of service positions in the community. He served as a member of the board of directors of Foster Grandparents and the Tri-County Citizens Commission on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse. McFarland was also vice-president and president of the Dubuque Chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons.

For many years during the 1950s McFarland served as a volunteer chess instructor at the DUBUQUE BOYS' CLUB.
