LARGE, William P. (Lambertville, NJ, May 4, 1822--Excelsior Springs, MO, Nov. 21, 1893). Large came to Dubuque in 1856 and established the W.P. Large & Co., wholesale dealers in boots and shoes. In 1879 this became LARGE AND AMSDEN.

Large was active in the community with work on the board of Dubuque Board of Trade, LINWOOD CEMETERY public library, YOUNG MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION (Y.M.C.A.) and the HOME FOR THE FRIENDLESS. (1) He helped organize the SECOND NATIONAL BANK and served it as a director and vice-president. He held the same offices in the DUBUQUE CATTLE COMPANY and the LINWOOD CEMETERY Association. He was the president of the ELEVENTH STREET ELEVATOR and was one of the organizers and a members of the executive board of FINLEY HOSPITAL (THE). Large served twenty-five years as chairman of the board of trustees of Second Presbyterian Church resigning only a year before his death.
