LANGE, Harvey M. (Dubuque, IA, July 28,1894--Dubuque, IA, Sept. 23, 1980). Known as the "Patriarch of the Dubuque County Republican Party," Lange began his long association with the party in 1912. He earned one dollar per afternoon distributing Teddy Roosevelt-for-President handbills. He served as the Dubuque County Republican chairperson from 1930 to 1942. In 1942 Lange won northeast Iowa's seat on the Republican State Central Committee. He retained the position until 1950 before beginning what he called a slow withdrawal from politics. He managed Henry Talle's congressional campaigns until 1958. In 1973 the members of the Dubuque County Republican Party presented Lange with the Herbert Hoover Award for outstanding service.

In Dubuque, he operated LANGE'S INSURANCE AGENCY.

Lange was president and an honorary trustee of FINLEY HOSPITAL (THE) and president of the Dubuque Independent Insurance Agents Association. He served twenty-seven years as a football referee in the Iowa Conference and tri-state area.
