HUGHES, Mary Lou Pierce. (Minneapolis, MN, Jan. 16, 1920--Indianapolis, IN, Dec. 31, 2014). The daughter of Edwin J. Pierce and Blanche (Collins) Pierce, Mary Lou graduated from Washburn High School in Minneapolis. She attended the University of Minnesota and was a member of Alpha Phi Sorority. She married Herbert L. HUGHES in 1940.

In Minneapolis, Mary Lou carried out volunteer work with the Minneapolis Junior League and served as a president of the Minneapolis Woman's Club. In Dubuque, she served as a "hostess" for her husband's family's business, FLEXSTEEL INDUSTRIES, INC. She served on the board of FINLEY HOSPITAL (THE).

Mary Lou owned her own store, Pizzazz, a boutique in the historic HOTEL JULIEN DUBUQUE. In addition to Pizzazz, she operated a store, MLH Limited, also in the Julien Hotel a few years after Pizzazz, and later in the Executive Inn in Evansville, Ind. In Key Largo, Fla., she was a founding contributor to the Ocean Reef Cultural Center.
