HOLLAND, Ora. (Barre, MA, Aug. 28, 1825--Barre, MA, Aug. 16, 1910). In 1843 moving west, Holland arrived in Chicago on his way to Jacksonville, Illinois where he learned the trade of being a carpenter and joiner. He came to Dubuque on March 30 1846. (1)

Built in 1857, the house had ten rooms, 12-foot ceilings, four fireplaces, two bathrooms, and intricate woodwork in the downstairs parlors and dining room. The home stayed in the Holland family until 1927. (3)

Mr. and Mrs. Holland's son, Frank, was a well-known surgeon in the community. A graduate of the St. Paul School of Surgery, he served two years as the superintendent of the St. Paul City Hospital before becoming the head physician at St. Barnabas Hospital in St. Paul. He then served as a physician in the United States Army including service at Fort Custer and Fort Wyoming before returning to Dubuque to practice. (4)
