HOFFMANN, Alois. (Dubuque, IA, Sept. 6, 1895--Dubuque, IA, July 21, 1982). Hoffmann, owner of the HOFFMANN MORTUARY for over fifty-six years prior to his retirement, was one of only two Iowans invested, with the approval of Pope John Paul II, as a Knight of the Southern Association of the Sovereign Military Order of the Knights of Malta.

A graduate of LORAS COLLEGE in 1916, Hoffmann served on its board of regents for nineteen years. He also served on the Board of Trustees and Development Council for CLARKE COLLEGE, member of the board of the Hoffmann Industrial Center for the Handicapped, DUBUQUE BANK AND TRUST COMPANY, and the DUBUQUE COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT.
