HISTORY DAY. National academic competition held annually for students from sixth grade through senior high. In 1982, Chris Moore, a sixth grader at KENNEDY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, became Dubuque's first student to win at the national level competition. Moore's entry, "Coal, America's Black Gold-the Key to Industries," consisted of a model of an underground coal mine with accompanying pictures and report. Students who won at the state level and competed at the national level included Angela Lyon (essay writing), Elizabeth Cornell (essay writing), Katie Bries (essay writing), and Danny Kuhl (essay writing).
