HEINZ, John W. (Dubuque, IA, Aug. 23, 1922--Dubuque, IA, April 15, 1992). In his younger years, Heinz was a meat cutter for BUEHLER BROTHERS meat market. After his marriage, he became an apprentice to his father-in-law, Peter J. KLOSTON, a master candy and ice cream manufacturer. Heinz learned the business and added his skills as a retailer in sales and organization to make BETTY JANE HOMEMADE CANDIES an eastern Iowa favorite.

Heinz was active in the Dubuque Downtown Merchants Association and was a conductor of the Dubuque Barbershop Chorus. He was also active for seven years in the Iowa District of the East Lutheran Church Extension Fund for the Missouri Synod promoting the establishment of new mission Lutheran churches. Upon the death of his father-in-law, Heinz and his wife, Ruth, were partners in the business. In 1981 a corporation was formed including their son, John P. Heinz, as a third share holder.
