DUBUQUE NATIONAL DEMOKRAT. Started in 1856, the Dubuque National Demokrat was the first German daily newspaper in Iowa. It changed to a tri-weekly after a few years. (1) The tri-weekly Demokrat was discontinued and only the weekly was issued after November 17, 1860. (2) On January 4, 1861 the National Demokrat entered its fifth year. (3) Listed as a weekly German publication, the "Demokrat" had Frederick GNIFFKE as proprietor and publisher.

The paper came into competition with STAATS ZEITUNG. In 1872 the editors at the Dubuque Herald were referring to Staats Zeitung as "the republican German paper" and the National Demokrat as the German democratic paper of the city. (4)

The 1858-1859 and 1861 Dubuque City Directory listed 91 Main.

The 1868 Guide, Gazetteer and Directory of the Dubuque & Soux (sic) City Railroad stated that this business was located on Locust between 5th and 6th.

The 1873-74 Dubuque City Directory listed 6th between Main and Locust.

The 1899-1900 Dubuque City Directory listed 148 6th for this weekly publication.

The 1911-12 through 1918 Dubuque City Directory listed 148 6th as the address.

The paper was last printed in 1933.
