DUBUQUE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SOCIETY. A meeting of those interested in becoming members of an archaeological society were to meet in rooms of the YOUNG MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION (Y.M.C.A.) on May 8, 1906 when officers would be elected, a constitution adopted and a permanent organization established. From those interested, it was assumed that the society would affiliate with the national organization and also the Palastrina Society. It was the intention to have local educators conduct different departments of the organization. (1)

The first meeting of this organization, a branch of the national organization, was held on October 29, 1906 when a paper on the "Influence of Egypt and Greece on Architecture" was read by local architect, John Spencer. (2)

In March 1908 Professor Knapp of Columbia University came to Dubuque to deliver a program on "Ancient Roman Theaters." The announcement stated the lecture would be illustrated by stereopticon views. (3)
