COMPASSIONATE FRIENDS. Headquartered in 1965 in Oak Brook, Illinois, Compassionate Friends came to Dubuque around 1963. The group is devoted to alleviating the grief of a specific group of people, parents who have lost children.

Meetings once each month allowed participants to express anger and helplessness. Occasionally a speaker might be planned. In 1965 the group was working on mailing a newsletter with literature from the national organization and Dubuque news of the local chapter. Another project planned was to leave cards at local funeral homes and hospitals advising parents of the group's presence. There were no club dues and people could attend as often as they wished.

In 2015 a chapter met at the MERCY MEDICAL CENTER.
