BOARD WALKS. The original SIDEWALKS of Dubuque, the board walks were replaced by brick and later concrete. Missing boards could often by traced to the need of an individual for firewood. The missing plank was usually replaced by the city marshal who also served as the city's carpenter. The marshal was often seen pushing a wheelbarrow filled with planks, a saw, hammer and nails.
