Welcome to Encyclopedia Dubuque! With tens of thousands of articles and images, Encyclopedia Dubuque is the most comprehensive online resource to the history and culture of Dubuque, Iowa.

Our funding came from a competitive award established by The City of Dubuque to make it possible for community-based groups to participate in the city's 175th anniversary year. This project was unanimously approved as one of 10 to receive funding from the 46 grant applications received.

Encyclopedia Dubuque is continuously revised and updated by Randolph W. LYON, author of the reference book, Dubuque: The Encyclopedia, the basis of this website. Special appreciation goes to Robert Joseph REDING, former owner of Bob's Antiques and Collectibles of Dubuque; Daniel Boland; Mac Kolar; David Ryan; James T. Yardley, Brother Xavier Werneth, S. Encyclopedia Dubuque is now offering GPS coordinates for those attempting to locate graves of those who fought in the Civil War. This information is being brought to you through the efforts of the Robert Mitchell Camp #206 SONS OF UNION VETERANS OF THE CIVIL WAR and the website Find-a-Grave. If you know of a person who fought in the Civil War, North or South, please contact us. There is a virtual cemetery with more than 700 graves of Union Veterans. This can be found at: http://www.findagrave.com/virtual-cemetery/446199

Paul Hemmer, Dubuque's favorite musician, composer, broadcaster, and contributor to this site has published a book! After years of research into actors, dancers, musicians, theaters, ballrooms, theaters and more of Dubuqueland, his book is written in the style of an informative chat, as only Paul can do. If you wish to purchase a copy, send me your name and email.

John Pregler, one of our important contributors, has developing a new website called http://thelensofhistory.com involving the history of the Tri-State area. His research on the Civil War has been outstanding; we encourage you to bookmark his website.

Be sure to watch Perpetual Motion Dubuque, a program produced by the City of Dubuque Cable TV Division. The program captures contemporary life in Dubuque with video shot from a constantly turning camera.

Encyclopedia Dubuque is very proud to display many sketches by acclaimed local artist, Norman ZEPESKI.

The research and writing would mean little if the website did not have expert attention from staff at the Carnegie-Stout Public Library. For this our sincere appreciation goes to Michael May, Scott Schlichte, Jason M. Burds, Andrew Fuerste-Henry, and Amy Muchmore.

We appreciate your help in making Encyclopedia Dubuque comprehensive and accurate. If you believe we should add a subject or topic, have information or pictures to share, or if you notice any factual or typographical errors, please let us know.
