S. S. KRESGE COMPANY. S.S. Kresge Company was based in Detroit and officially founded in 1911 by Sebastian Spering Kresge. It was the #3 variety chain in the United States at the beginning of the 1960s behind F.W. Woolworth and W.T. Grant. At the end of 1960, Kresge had 759 variety stores, mostly located in the Midwest and Eastern states. (1)

The company was renamed the Kmart Corporation in 1977, and evolved into today's Sears Holdings Corporation, parent of Kmart and Sears. (2)

The 1915 through the 1980 Dubuque City Directory listed 790 Main.
