PLOESSEL, Emil. (New Vienna, Mar. 18, 1914--Dubuque, IA, May 4, 1995). In June 1946 Ploessel, formerly an employee of GENERAL DRY BATTERIES from 1939 to 1946, became the first person hired at the JOHN DEERE DUBUQUE WORKS. He was also the employee who was instrumental in forming what became United Auto Workers Union Local 94 at the plant. He worked in the foundry lifting heavy molds--work which later affected his health.
After the vote was taken to start the union, Ploessel served as the vice-president for several years.
