MCALEECE SPORTS COMPLEX. Named for Gerald "Red" MCALEECE, the sports complex on CHAPLAIN SCHMITT ISLAND filled a pressing athletic need in the community. In the early 1980s, nearly half of the city's lighted softball fields had been converted into industrial sites in the reclaimed land bordering Kerper Boulevard.

In June, 1982 the city's voters approved a bond measure that resulted in a softball/baseball complex. McAleece Sports Complex covering 42-acres includes Petrakis Park, the home baseball field for LORAS COLLEGE and WAHLERT CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL. Dubuque Little League and three semi-pro baseball teams also used the field. In 2010 three softball fields have summer adult leagues playing for fourteen weeks from May through August six nights per week. Most nights had four games on each field.
