JOSEPH MICHEL. Jos. Michel, a cigar manufacturing company, was opened in Dubuque in 1903 with three employees. In 1910 the company manufactured 1,031,000 cigars with 80% sold locally and the rest in the immediate area of the city. By 1911 business had increased to the degree that twenty-five employees were needed at the factory located at 721-727 Clay Street. The two most popular varieties of cigar were the "Old Fireside," a five-cent cigar, and "Michel's Best," a ten-cent cigar.

The 1913 Dubuque and Dubuque County Directory through the 1918 Dubuque and East Dubuque City Directory stated that this business was located at 721-727 Clay.

The 1929 Dubuque City Directory listed 717-721 Central.

The 1934 Dubuque City Directory listed 719-727 Central.
