GOODING, W. A. (Lockport, IL, Jan. 4, 1833--Unknown). In 1852, Gooding became part of the management of the Illinois and Michigan Canal as the assistant of John B. Preston, the Superintendent. Gooding later succeeded him as Superintendent of the canal and occupied that position until after the canal passed into the hands of the State in 1870.
After retiring from the management of the canal, Mr. Gooding spent one year in Cuba, and three years in Africa. He visited the gold fields and the diamond fields and traveled extensively through that tropical country. After his return to the United States, he entered the lumber business in Wisconsin. In 1877, he came to Dubuque and established his business here.
