CONKLIN, Eugene Vincent. (Chanute, KS, Dec. 4, 1923--Dubuque, IA, May 15, 2012). The son of Marie (Sewell) and Eugene V. Conklin, Eugene married Marilyn Steinert on Nov. 21, 1950.

Dr. Conklin served his country as a naval aviator flying dive bombers in WORLD WAR II. He was a member of Air Group 16 during the Pacific Conflict and participated in the "Marianas Turkey Shoot." He was a recipient of the Navy Cross, Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal.

Dr. Conklin graduated from the University of Kansas School of Medicine with a specialty in pediatrics. He was a diplomat of the American Academy of Pediatrics and practiced pediatrics in Dubuque for 45 years at Medical Associates.

Attending Kansas University and Medical School, Dr. Conklin was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and the Nu Sigma Nu Medical Fraternity. He was a member of the Tri-State Fliers, Dubuque Medical Society and AA. He served on the board of directors for the Gannon Mental Health Center, Dubuque Association of Children with Learning Disabilities and was a participant in The Big Brothers Program. He was an active member of ST. LUKE'S UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, serving on several boards, and was a volunteer at the DUBUQUE ARBORETUM AND BOTANICAL GARDENS and the MINES OF SPAIN.

Dr. Conklin's many hobbies included sailing. He and his son Michael won the first Greater Mississippi River Sailboat Race from Dubuque to Bellevue.
