CATE, Peter M
CATE, Peter M. (Dubuque, IA, Mar. 12, 1927—Tulln, Austria, Apr. 23, 2008). Cate joined the Army after graduating from DUBUQUE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL in 1946. He served in the KOREAN CONFLICT and became an expert cryptographer while rising in the ranks to chief warrant officer while teaching at the Signal School in Germany.
Cate retired from the military in 1966 and joined the staff of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). He became the head of the contract division that was responsible for finding peaceful uses of nuclear energy. He was also involved in the tsetse fly eradication program that saved thousands of lives in Africa. As a former staff member of IAEA, he shared in the agency’s 2005 Nobel Peace Prize.
