A. Y. MCDONALD PARK. The park was named in memory of Andrew Young MCDONALD, a pioneer Dubuque industrialist whose family in 2015 continued to operate one of the largest companies in the city. A. Y. McDonald Park was located on the Hawthorne Street peninsula. Since the area was the site of five city water wells, the park was originally to be named Water Works Park.

The A. Y. McDonald Charitable Foundation paid $250,000 for park-naming rights. The dedication in September 2006 coincided with the 150th anniversary celebration of A.Y.MCDONALD MANUFACTURING COMPANY.
