PEABODY, William H.
PEABODY, William H. (Syracuse, NY, 1823--Dubuque, IA, July 1, 1906). Capitalist. Peabody established the first wholesale and jobbing trade in Toledo, Ohio, before moving to Dubuque in 1856. He reestablished himself in the mercantile business and expanded into a profitable liquor trade that he maintained for eighteen years.
Peabody's home at 1428 Locust was used from 1906 until 1960 as a rectory for SAINT JOHN'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH. In 1964 the home, an example of SECOND EMPIRE ARCHITECTURE, was torn down for parking space.
