CANFIELD, William J. Sr. (Dyesville, IA, Feb. 14, 1868--Dubuque, IA, June 9, 1946) Hotel owner. Canfield worked from 1902 to 1903 in the coach department of the Milwaukee Railroad. He then became interested in hotel management and operated hotels in Burlington, Iowa; Galesburg, Illinois; and Wichita, Kansas. For a short time, he was in the laundry business in Dubuque.

In 1920 William Canfield, Sr. and his son, William J. Canfield, leased "The Paris" hotel in Dubuque. At this time, they purchased furnishings and fixtures for the hotel and completely remodeled it. This became the HOTEL CANFIELD. For nine years while operating his hotel, William J. Canfield, Jr. also maintained his position as custodian of the BANK AND INSURANCE BUILDING.

William J. Canfield, Sr. and his wife died on June 9, 1946 in a fire at their hotel.
